Okay, so you all probably know that Denmark is one of the most expensive countries in the world. But visitors are at least always guaranteed a cheap laugh from the quirks of the Danish language. (Never mind the tourists – I always get a giggle! Even though I’m now fluent in Danish and really should know better…)
What do you do when you arrive at Copenhagen Central Station, laden down with luggage? Just take the elevator! But make sure to press the right button…
If you’re out driving in Copenhagen, then you may come face-to-face with one of these signs. Keep your eyes firmly on the road!
I spent most of this (year’s fantastic Danish) summer chasing coaches around town. Was trying to get a good shot of this particular one. And failed miserably. So this morning I ended up driving out to the coach company headquarters (I kid you not) in order to get this snap for you. (Paparazzi, eat your heart out!) Do not adjust your set…you read that right, it does say “Lyngby Turist Fart“…
Welcome to Denmark?!
PS: Just in case you were wondering, the Danish word ‘fart‘ can be translated as ‘speed’ or ‘motion’.

Loved this article Diane. I often speak Danish when at home with my parents (they live here in Australia now) and it’s a delight to see the faces of friends as they try to suppress their laughter at our conversation, even though they have no idea about what we are saying.
Most laugh and say, “there they go speaking swedish chef again!”.
Congratulations on your first blog post for denmark.dk!
Hi Nicci
Tee hee, I love the Swedish chef…I even have a recipe for ‘Hurdy Gurdy’ Swedish Sausage Stew on my blog… http://www.dianedenmark.com/2009/08/hurdy-gurdy-swedish-sausage-stew.html
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! Hope you’ll come back soon? ;D
Hey Asfora, glad you found me over here! xoxo
Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one laughing at these things. Danish has the most funny sounding words out of all the languages I know. Some others that I used to laugh at when I lived there (beware: I was 20, so they were all very funny):
Slut: finish/exit
Slutspurt: Clearance Sale
Bådfart: Boat Speed?
Fartpilot: Cruise Control
Hår: Sounds bad…
I could probably think of more, but for your sake I won’t.
Thanks for the great blog!
Middlefart, the name of a town on Fyn, is my favourite so far
Hi Anna Maren!
Tee hee, I had forgotten about ‘slut’! Those are great, keep them coming!
Hi Diane, I know if my husband visited he would love to hit the “i fart” button. Great post full of giggles.
Hi Ida!
Next time I’m in Jutland visiting family I shall make sure to try and get a snap of a Middlefart sign…
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment
Ooooo, thanks for coming to visit me here, Sam – I know you’ve come a long way (baby)! ;D
He he.. I’m Danish, and I always get the same laugh when I’m in an elevator with a big ‘I FART’ sign on the wall.
But I don’t.. honestly..
What about the sign, I saw on the Feggesund Ferry:
God overfart?
LOL

I’m interested to know if it’s possible to copy a paragraph of this publication to use for my school project.
Hi Connie – you’re welcome to copy a paragraph if you add the source
I tried so many times how to pronounce the Danish alphabet but sad to say i cant pronounce correctly.
the first word ive learned from my Danish bf was “takk” or thank u.
for more than 4 years that weve together still i cant speak fluent Danish..
Being Danish, I never made the connection betweet fart (dk) and fart (en) nor slut (dk) and slut (en)
Just goes to show how narrow minded you are concerning your own language.
I have never thought about the danish words like that! But it’s funny (:
